Mutants can travel through time and manipulate the past now. Take that, regular humans!

That's the brand new layer Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past" installment intends to add to the "X" universe  this go-round, and if this first trailer for the pic is any indication it's going to be a deep and dramatic little effort indeed.

Hey, Singer even said so himself.

So, what are these "stakes" he speaks of? Well, as the preview hints, Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen), whose status of being at odds with one another has run the gamut in this franchise, find themselves in a mutual pickle as an event from the past threatens to land all of mutantkind in horrible internment camps.

Predictably — 'cause what kind of movie would it be if things just went according to the first plan? — neither Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) nor Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) seem particularly willing to budge from their bad places when he arrives, and it looks like poor Wolfy's gonna be put through the bullet-riddled ringer for his service. Some gratitude they've got there, sheesh.

Not to worry, though. 'Cause when X comes along and hits you with one of these guys ...

... it's practically game over already. He's bound to get his way without even using his mind-invading trickery.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" features the return of "X-Men: First Class" stars Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Lucas Till, along with "X-Men" alums Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore and Daniel Cudmore and series noobs Ellen Page, Evan Peters, Booboo Stewart and Bingbing Fan. The film hits theaters on May 23, 2014.
